The Indonesian island of Bali is rich in creativity and has an active relationship with symbolism in everyday life. Our Symbolism and Creativity Retreat, based on workshops already running successfully in London, and our successful Bali Retreat of 2017 is designed to help a personal, creative journey, unlocking inspiration, ideas and artistic themes from our unconscious, through an understanding of symbolic thought and its significance to who we are and what motivates us. What better place to do this than the beautiful island of Bali, steeped in artistic cultural heritage and rich, vibrant symbolism?

This retreat offers a unique and extraordinary opportunity for self-exploration and the development of personal creative practice, supported by experienced Art Therapists, in a beautiful, contained environment. You will have the opportunity to explore not only personal symbols, but to be able to do this in the context of one of the world’s most artistic, spiritual and symbolic places.

Talking through symbols and creativity - Bali Retreat 2017

Talking through symbols and creativity - Bali Retreat 2017

You will leave Bali with a large portfolio of your own creative ideas, plus your own ceramic, carving, offering baskets and final canvas, if these interest you. You will also have had an experience like no other, working intensely with like-minded people and interacting closely with the rituals and lives of the people of this beautiful island. The creative elements are intense and fulfilling, but there is also plenty of time for yoga, massages, beauty treatments and swimming and sunbathing, all available at The Indies. There are also opportunities for shopping and surfing, with transport to help you get there.

The Retreat

The retreat includes yoga by the pool every morning, morning workshops exploring symbolism, both universal and personal, through guided artistic practice and a contained, multi-sensory experience, facilitated by qualified Art Therapists. All art materials are included, plus a portfolio to take home all the creative pieces from the week. We will work towards creating a final canvas to encapsulate the experience. It is not necessary to be an artist to participate in this, or to be in active artistic practice. We use templates and shared ideas, plus a library of collage images to help stimulate ideas and creativity from within For more information on prices and what's included in this Retreat, click below

Activities, trips and the festival

Lunch, afternoons and evenings are for free time and personal exploration, or we highly recommend you join our stimulating, creative trips, which have been designed around the heart of true, creative and symbolic Bali. These include:

A visit to an artisan ceramic factory, joining the blessing ritual of the Head potter, plus a chance to play with clay on the wheel under his instruction, and to glaze and decorate a ceremonial Balinese box to take home.

Learning the art of making traditional Balinese offertory baskets, found all over the island filled with gifts and flowers made as offerings to the Hindu Gods. We will take these to the beach and reflect on ideas of blessings and offerings.

Travelling up the east coast into old, rural Bali, we will have a demonstration of the traditional  method for making shadow puppets and get a chance to create a piece to take home.  We will then have dinner at the highly praised Bali Asli restaurant, serving a refined and beautiful take on Balinese food, with a terrace overlooking the volcano and the rice paddies.
