Exploring our shadow

March 2018

STAGE ONE:

STAGE TWO:

STAGE THREE:

The Shadow - Stage 1

Participants use this drawing to get into the flow of the shadow, colouring in. While they are colouring, reflections arise on what the image and symbols bring up. Have any appeared in dreams, or do they remind one of stories or fairy tales from some point in their life? Which of the characters in the picture do they most identify a part of themselves with? Does the shadow imagery they are colouring mirror feelings about the darker aspects of life in general and themselves in particular? Or do they think of different images and figures? Participants try to stay with the more difficult aspect of themselves – the parts they would rather were hidden behind a mask, that sometimes scare yourself or others or make you critical about yourself. Do they often see these traits in others?

The Shadow - Stage 2

In this drawing the shadow imagery has been pared back to the basic structures, so that participants can explore their own ideas of the dark, hidden aspects of life, rather than the artist’s symbolism. They start by treating the drawing like an inkblot, turning it round and looking from different aspects, and seeing if any shapes or symbols emerge, then add personal own symbols, shading, people, animals, characters from fairy tales.

The Shadow - Stage 3

This page gives participants space to make a note of what is conjured up by the shadow . They draw their own shadow, adding collage or written notes, stories and fairy tales, and explore the meaning of these and personal symbols. Paying attention to how colouring and exploring the shadow feels is crucial. This puts participants in touch with the darker more hidden aspects of their unconscious mind, and how far they are happy to explore this at this stage. It is ok to feel some dark and scary things. Bringing the shadow to consciousness is a key element to finding what drives us, what creates our neuroses and how we can begin integrating all aspects of ourselves. Without this, we tend to project these aspects onto others rather than ‘own’ them.
