Home stage 1

In the workshops, participants use this drawing to get into flow, colouring in the picture. While colouring, think of what the image reminds you of – does it bring back any memories? Have you had any dreams about houses or home? Do any of the houses speak more to you as you are colouring them – remind you of good or bad things? How does this make you feel? Try and think back to places you have lived and what memories you have – also about what is your ‘paradise’ home. What would you need to do to achieve this? We start the workshop with a colouring-in template of home.

Home stage 2

In this drawing the houses have been pared back to their basic structures, with decoration and individuality taken away so that you can explore your own ideas of the house. Think about any dreams and memories about home. Add your own symbols, shading, people, animals, characters from life and stories, and colour this in. Don’t worry if it a ‘good’ drawing or not, the imagery and symbolism is what matters. You can black out or shade in any houses that mean nothing to you, or if you want to create a less ‘crowded’ feeling.

Home Stage 3

This page gives you space to make a note of symbols, memories and dreams conjured up by home. You can draw your own home, create a collage from other images or make written notes. Add stories and fairy tales, and explore the meaning of these and your symbols from other sources. However, remember every symbol has its own meaning for us as individuals, so pay attention to how colouring and exploring home has made you feel. This will put you in touch with how comfortable you are with exploring your true, integrated self, and how far into memories and symbols of home you are happy to go. It is ok to feel some dark and scary things – write and draw them and keep them in the book. But home is also symbolic of the place where we can completely and truly become ourselves and explore in a safe and known place..
